This episode explores how coffee made its voyage from Eritrea, modern day Ethiopia, Africa into the Americas and how in a short time its production displaced the one of tobacco. The gradual introduction of coffee in Mexico began in the late 1700s and it was directly linked to wealthy immigrants from Italy, Greece, Belgium and Germany who kickstarted one of the nation’s most profitable crops.
Today, 13 of the 32 states of Mexico are coffee producers, and its consumption, production and costumes associated to the drink have been surprisingly linked to the country’s own political history, find out why!
